Salivating for Summer: Cooking in July

Ah, July. Summer loving, indeed.

As the warm sunshine envelops us and the pace of life slows down, it is time to unlock the art of doing summer well. With simplicity as our guiding star and a more relaxed rhythm to the days, cooking takes a gentle step back — and easy enjoyment becomes the main course.

As a proud Cancerian with a natural affinity for creating a homely atmosphere, this is how I intend to enjoy my summer cooking this season.

Embrace the sun

As the sun gently wakes us each morning, there is a magical shift in how we approach food. Gone are the days of slaving over a hot stove. Instead, we opt for assembling delightful meals with fresh ingredients that require minimal cooking. It is a time to let the vibrant flavours of the season shine through.

Simplicity is everything

We find real comfort in uncomplicated recipes that allow the ingredients to speak for themselves. Whether it is a refreshing salad bursting with ripe tomatoes and crisp cucumbers, or a plate of good cheese with crusty bread, the beauty lies entirely in the simplicity of the flavours. Nothing needs to be complicated right now.

Step away from the oven

Let the oven take a well-deserved holiday. We say goodbye to roasting and baking, and instead embrace the art of putting things together. Vibrant salads, beautifully layered sandwiches, and refreshing fruit-infused drinks — our creativity thrives when we cook without heat. It is a time to let our taste buds revel in the raw, the fresh, and the very best of summer produce.

Take it outside

If you are anything like me, you will seize every opportunity to eat outdoors. There is something truly enchanting about dining al fresco. Pull up a chair, pour a glass of chilled rosé, and savour the simple pleasure of enjoying a meal in the open air. Breathe in the scents. Savour the flavours. Let the evening stretch out in front of you.

As we bask in the glory of summer, let us embrace everything the season has to offer — the sunshine, the simplicity, and the slower pace. Happy high summer, everyone.
